The Best Halloween Party Game

My Brothers and I have hosted Halloween parties for several years. They are big events with lots of guests. Sometimes upwards of a hundred people will show up for one of these parties. We go all out, decorating the front and back yards as well as inside the house. We rotate who hosts the party each year and all pitch in to decorate for the party. The first few parties we held seemed to be missing something and were not as successful as we had hoped. Sure, a lot of people would show up for the Halloween party. But, some were my friends and some were my brother’s friends, which mostly didn’t know each either. The problem with this was that guests would tend to gather in small groups of people that knew each other. Save a very few of the more outgoing people, most of our guests just didn’t feel comfortable striking up conversations with others that they didn’t know. As a result, many of our guests would hang for awhile, then head off to some other party that was g...

Costuming 101: Constructing Waist Armor

Costume Armor Protection for the Waist We learned how to make a basic 'chest-cage' in the first tutorial Fantasy Armor Created from Recycled Plastic Chemical Barrels and the follow-up Creating Wearable Armor / Upper Leg Protection. How to Make an Edward Scissorhands Costume

Everybody loves a great Halloween costume. Here's one that's sure to get people talking. When I was 18 I won the high-school costume contest by making my own Edward Scissorhands costume out of simple supplies mostly around the house. With a little care, this costume can make anyone look just like Johnny Depp's famous character from the 1990 classic Tim Burton film (that's me in the picture). Here's what you need to make the costume work: Shoes. A simple pair of solid black running shoes works best. Any kind of shoe will work, even a boot, so long as it is solid black. Pants. Again, solid black pants are a necessity. Black jeans usually are not a good idea as they tend to be faded and kill the look. Something jet black is necessary; I found black slush pants at a used clothing store for $2. Top. The ideal top is a black, long-sleeved turtle neck shirt. Again, I was able to find mine at a used clothing store for cheap. The turtle neck isn't totally necessary but is definitely the most...

Best Ways to Keep a Halloween Pumpkin Fresh and Crisp

Halloween is such a fun time to carve pumpkins. The main concern with most people is how you can keep your pumpkin fresh after carving it. From dealing with pumpkin carvings every year with my family, we have experimented quite a bit trying to keep the pumpkins fresh as possible. From what we have learned, the main thing is to never carve the Halloween pumpkin weeks before. Always make sure to carve your Halloween pumpkin 4-6 days before Halloween. The closer you are to Halloween, the better your chances are to your pumpkin fresh and not decaying. Another way to keep your Halloween pumpkin fresh is to keep it as cold as possible. To use this technique the weather must be cold where you are living. After carving the Halloween pumpkin, place it outside at night with the nice cool night breeze. This way the sun is in and the heat will not destroy your Halloween pumpkin. Some people may also suggest placing your carved Halloween pumpkin into your freezer to keep it fresh; is this possible...

Halloween is a Blend of Celtic and Roman Rituals

Few people realize that Halloween is actually one of the oldest holidays we celebrate. Dressing in costume, attending parties, and door-to-door trick or treating are all part of Halloween traditions we observe today. However, these customs evolved from Celtic and Roman rituals that are centuries old. The Celts of Ireland, Britain, and France believed the year was divided in two parts: The light half of the year referred to spring and summer months with longer days and shorter nights. The dark half of the year referred to fall and winter months with shorter days and longer nights. Halloween is observed on the evening of October 31 because this was the last day of the year’s light half for Celts. They associated the start of the year’s dark half with death and celebrated the “Festival of Samhain.” During this festival, Celts gathered on hilltops and dressed in animal skins. They set huge fires and burned crops and animals as a sacrifice. It was believed during t...

A New Halloween Tradition, Ghosting

Over the past few years, my family has been ghosted twice. Ghosting is a new Halloween tradition that is gaining in popularity in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and other countries as well. Depending where you live, the new custom may be known as "Ghosting," or "Boo-ing" but the basic premise is the same. This is also similar to the 12 Days of Christmas, but can be done in one night. Ghosting is a fun and harmless way to spread the Halloween spirit to your friends and neighbors. This activity can begin any time in October but the first or second week of the month is the best, allowing sufficient time for the entire neighborhood to be "ghosted." The usual tactic is to "ghost" two families in your community or neighborhood. You can do this with the following items: • Two Halloween goodie bags or brown paper sacks filled with treats. • Two pictures of a ghost or two tissue paper ghosts. • Two letters stating that "...

Halloween on a Budget

As a child, there are three important aspects of Halloween: Candy, Costume, and Fun. As a parent, there are two more: Safety, and Budget. Here are a few ideas for saving money and salving fears. I can't tell you how many times my parents told me, "Well, I'm not Sarah's mommy, and we don't always do things the way Sarah's mommy does." Or how easy it was to get excited about an opportunity to be creative because my parents were excited about it. Making a costume out of what you have around the house can be a lot of fun for you and your child. Children love wearing their parents' clothes. High heels hold an especial thrill. If you have a pair that are already scuffed, and have wide heels to help with balance, offer to create a costume around that-- and bring a pair of your child's easy-on shoes for walking between houses. Daddy's tie is another point of fascination for younger children, as are suspenders, make-up, and hats. My favorite costume growing up was one my mom threw togeth...

Tips for Throwing a Great Halloween Party for Adults

Remember if kids are going to be there try to keep it G rated. A lot of costumes are already sold out by mid October, so shop early! Some people jus...

How to Create Scary Halloween Hairstyles

Are you being a vampire, zombie or monster for Halloween and need a scary-looking hairstyle? Hairstyles for Halloween can be really fun. You can make your hair different colors, add various textures, or even tease it up to appear knotted and frizzy-looking. What makes a scary Halloween hairstyle? The hairstyle itself can be quite scary, but the face makeup is what really makes your hairstyle appear scarier looking, especially if you have a very pale white face with some fake blood coming out of your mouth. If you just do your hair scary-looking without adding the right makeup, some people may think you just rolled out of bed. However, I know some people who don't wear makeup of any kind; if you really put emphasis on your Halloween hairstyle without the makeup you can still pull it off. Some ways of wearing your hair "scary" for Halloween are by crimping it; sleek the top and frizz out the rest; braids all over the entire head sticking out; completely teased and placed into ...

Things to Do in Salem, Massachusetts Part 2

Salem, Massachusetts is a great place to visit year-round, but during the Halloween season, in the fall, its a spectacular place to visit, and its a relatively inexpensive place to find entertainment.  If you are halfway across the country, outside the country, or just a few miles away and you have never been, its a great idea.  Summer is coming, and from Summer to fall, tis the season to visit the home of The Salem Witch Trials! My first piece of advice to you if you are booking hotel accommodations is not to stay in Salem.  You want to book a room in Beverly, Danvers, or Peabody.  You will save at least $50 - $100.  Just because you are staying in Salem, you will get charged an arm and a leg and have nowhere to park!  Its like a zoo, especially during September and October!  Hotel prices are jacked up sky high at that time of year.  If you stayed at Motel 6 in Danvers, Massachusetts, which is about six miles from The Peabody Essex Museum in Sa...

Halloween Beginnings

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays, worldwide. We know it today as a holiday that is held yearly on October 31. Many of us decorate our homes with ghosts, ghouls, ghosts, goblins, spider webs , black cats, and scary music. The children dress up in costumes, going from house to house hollering “Trick or Treat” to those who answer the door, at which time they are given a treat of candy, gum, fruit, or coins. This is a time when candy or caramel apples are extremely popular and readily available in the stores, or made at home as a family project. Where To Find Plus Size Costumes for Halloween

Having reluctantly been a large sized person for some time, I have become grateful that there are so many wonderful selections available at every price level for plus size Halloween costumes. There was a time when sewing your own was the only option. Now, the choices are so much wider. I would suggest, however, that if you know what costume you want, try to buy it as early as possible. Plus sizes are still made in more limited amounts, and the earlier you can purchase, the more choice you will have. Several national stores that I am aware of have a fairly wide and updated selection of costumes. A store to definitely visit, even if you are not buying is Spirit Costume stores. Spirit Costume stores are usually open just during the Halloween season, but they have a year round on-line shop at www.spiritcostume.com. Pirate costumes, flower children outfits, vampire outfits, angels, devils, magicians and wizards, witches and warlocks are all popular this year and available. Spirit Costumes ...

Keeping Kids Safe on Halloween

Halloween can be a fun evening for parents as well as children. To help insure a safe evening parents need to set down and ensure that kids and parents are on the same page as far the  safety rules go. Some parents insist on going with their children, others let them go by themselves for a short distance within the neighborhood. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Kids should never go alone. At least have two buddies. Be cautious of strangers. It is a good idea to let the kids know how far is too far. Work out a neighborhood route where children will be going. Areas that are well lit and where children are familiar is always best. Be sure they know what is expected of them. Be sure that parents know what route the kids will take. Be sure your children know and obey traffic rules. Cross in the cross walks and walk on the sidewalk and on driveways. Walk do not run and stay together. Don’t play around lit Jack-o-lanterns.
